Our Mission

The mission of the Nursery and Preschool Ministry at Somerset Alliance is to provide a clean, safe, and nurturing environment where your child can experience God's love and learn the importance of Scripture; that parents are respected, loved and feel that their child is loved and well cared for; that our volunteers and staff feel valued and supported as part of a ministry team that is serving our young families.

The Little Children and Jesus

People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have him touch them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

Luke 18:15-17

Parent Guidelines and Procedures

Parents are the first and most important teacher in their child's life. We find it a great privilege to walk alongside your family and partner with you in laying a foundation for faith in your child's life. We take that task of caring for your child very seriously and will do our very best to care for them as you wish.

  • Upon the first visit to the nursery, parents will be asked to complete a Nursery Registration Form. Please note any allergies and food specifications on your form. Let us know if there are ever any changes.
  • Parents will be given a card with your child's name on it along with the names of the people permitted to pick him/her up. Please bring this card back and give it to the coordinator to pick up your child. We will not release your child to anyone who is not on the card.
  • Parents are asked to remain with their child until a volunteer is available in the nursery. This does not include the coordinator who checks you in.
  • We have a pager system to contact you if your child is upset and cannot be consoled. Volunteers will page you if they cannot console your child after 15 minutes of being dropped off.
  • We ask that all parents remain outside of the nursery for the safety of the children. If you would need to come into the nursery due to separation issues, we ask that you please remove your shoes so that little fingers do not get stepped on.
  • When the service or Sunday School has ended, we ask that parents arrive promptly to pick up your child.
  • Snacks and drinks are provided to the toddlers and preschoolers. Please specify at drop off and on your registration form if your child is not allowed to have our snack.
  • Please address any potty training or special needs on the registration form and let the coordinator know at drop off, so that the volunteers may better assist your child.
  • Parents should make sure that all bags and sippy cups are labeled with the child's name. Diaper bag tags are provided by the church. Let the Preschool Children's Ministry Director or the coordinator at drop off know if you need one.
  • If your child has an accident and we cannot find a change of clothes in your child's bag, we will change them into a spare set of clothes that we have. We ask that you wash them and return them the next week.
  • We encourage all parents whose children regularly attend the nursery to volunteer on a regular basis in order to provide enough adults in the rooms to keep the children safe. Pick up a Nursery Registration Form at the Connection Center or talk to the Preschool Ministry Director if you are interested in helping.
  • To prevent the spread of colds and flu, we ask that, if your child is sick, to not bring him/her to the nursery. You will be notified immediately to come and get your child if he/she becomes sick while in the nursery.
  • Children will move up to the next class at the time of their birthday if they are at the appropriate age to move to the next class. The Preschool Ministry Director will notify you if we feel that your child would benefit from moving up to the next class early.

Wellness Policy

For the protection of the children and the volunteers, please do not leave an ill child in the nursery. The following criteria, suggested by the Health Department, will be used to determine when volunteers and children do not need to be in the nursery.

The presence of ANY of these symptoms within the past 24 hours:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Undiagnosed rashes or boils
  • On-going cough
  • Signs of common childhood illnesses, such as chicken pox, mumps, fifths disease, measles, etc.
  • Runny nose with any colored discharge (unless clear and due to teething)
  • Pink eye or any other eye infections
  • Head Lice (child should be free of all knits and will be checked)

***Please notify the Preschool Children's Ministry Director or the church office if your child exhibits signs of a communicable disease within 24 hours of being in the nursery.
